Semantic Feature Analysis Treatment: From Impairment to Participation

Word retrieval impairment is a persistent, frustrating problem for people with acquired aphasia. Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) treatment is widely used to treat word retrieval problems in this population. Its outcomes have been investigated in different languages and by different research teams around the world. This course briefly reviews current theories of word retrieval to provide the theoretical framework for SFA treatment, which guides people with aphasia to repeatedly activate the word retrieval process at its earliest stage. Review of treatment protocols at the single-word and discourse levels is enhanced with videotapes of people with aphasia participating in treatment. The course will provide examples of how SFA treatment has been adapted for participation-based activities including conversation groups and partner training.

Mary Boyle, Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Montclair State University, in Montclair, NJ, USA, received her Ph.D. and M.A. from Northwestern University and her B.S from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  Before joining the faculty at MSU, she was Director of the Speech, Language & Audiology Department at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY.  Her clinical and research interests focus on treatment of adults with aphasia, particularly word retrieval impairment in discourse. Current research projects include developing a multi-level aphasia treatment to improve storytelling and examining how participation in a conversation group changes language production at the word, sentence, and conversation levels.
